There seems to be a difference of opinion on just how many counties make up the bluegrass region. One opinion is that the bluegrass region goes all the way to Louisville, others point to a smaller number of counties. After much research, the majority of "Bluegrass Region Experts" seem to agree on the follow:

The inter bluegrass region consist of seven counties, Bourbon, Clark, Fayette, Jessamine, Madison, Scott, and Woodford Counties - now one metropolitan area. The outer bluegrass region consist of Anderson, Boyle, Franklin, Garrard, Harrison, Lincoln, Mercer, and Nicholas Counties. This Bluegrass Region was the first to be settled as colonists began the move west and now is home to about half the state's population.

Lexington is the heart of the bluegrass and one of the oldest cities west of the Allegheny Mountains. It is said that the name was given to the settlement by pioneers who had just received news of the Battle of Lexington.

Champion racehorses and fine bourbon whisky is as much a part of the bluegrass history as the bluegrass region it is named for. As early as 1775, enterprising Kentuckians were making corn whiskey. Kentucky settlers gave whiskey several new twists, beginning with corn, which was abundant since settlers could claim 400 acres if they built a cabin and grew a patch of corn.

Today, by definition, bourbon is a whiskey made from a mash containing at least 51 percent corn. Distilleries in Kentucky now produce 95 percent of all the bourbon produced in the US. Three distilleries in the Lexington area offer free tours. The oldest contentious operating distillery in Kentucky is located in the bluegrass region. Considered a Kentucky craft, bourbon is indeed a handcrafted product, much of it still made in small batches with fastidious quality control.

Kentucky spring water, purified as it flows over limestone rock formations, is perfect for bourbon distilling because it is free of minerals that affect taste. This iron-free limestone water is what makes Kentucky bourbon world-renowned.

Kentucky is one of four states to call itself a commonwealth. In 1792 when Kentucky became the 15th state, the first on the western frontier, both commonwealth and state were used. Commonwealth meaning government based on the common consent of the people, dates to the time of Oliver Cromwell's England in the mid-1600s. Kentucky, once part of Virginia, chose to remain a commonwealth when it separated from Virginia.
